I ran both pdfinfo and pdftotext from the command line. The files are processed by pdfinfo. The files that are failing, produce both an "Unimplemented function type" and "bus error" when processed by pdftotext.
It appears that the files that are failing were produced as pdf output from Framemaker 6.0. (Some files I have produced by Framemaker 5.5.6 processed correctly.) So it looks like Framemaker 6.0 produced faulty pdf. (Framemaker is gone away anyway.)
