Have you tried running with one or more -v options in order to get some additional information about what htdig is doing? That might point you in the right direction. Using up all available RAM or running out of disk space can result in the process terminating. Also, if you are on a shared server, there might be process level limits imposed on how much memory or CPU time your processes are allowed.
