I'm trying to setup htdig on a powerbook G3, running
Mac OS 10.3.9. Installation and configuration seemed
to go fine. When I run "rundig" everything seems to
run fine, and db files under 5 megs are created.
However, once htnotify kicks in, it makes the
processor load skyrocket and it doesn't seem to
terminate (it ran for over 30 minutes until I
terminated it prior to it finishing). Does anyone
know of a reason why htnotify would hang up like this?

There is a bug in htnotify that affects certain compiler/OS platforms in this manner. If you don't need htnotify, the easiest fix is to simply remove it from the rundig script. If you do have a need for htnotify, then define the htnotify_prefix_file and htnotify_suffix_file attributes so that they point at real files.

If you want to correct the problem at the source code level, there is a
patch floating around somewhere in the patch archive, but I don't have a
URL handy at the moment.
