Are you sure that you don't have executables and config files for more than one version of ht://Dig mixed up on the system? You say that you are using 3.2.0b6, however I believe the "not HTML" message is only generated by the 3.1.x branch of the code. The above output is what I would expect if you were running a 3.1.x version of htdig with a config file that did not correctly specify an appropriate external_parsers attribute.
