Sorry to add to such an old thread. However, I had this same problem
with Debian 3.1 ("Sarge"), the current stable distribution. And that
version includes GCC version 3.3.5; the FAQ says this shouldn't be
needed after GCC version 3.2.0b5.
My compile is just running for the first time, so I don't for-sure
know this fixed my problem, but it at least got me past the configure
test for fstream.h.
Also, the compile is generating a warning
cc1: warning: "-Wno-deprecated" is valid for C++ but not for C/ObjC
for each of a large number of files compiled. No other errors, so
this may well be harmless, but the FAQ should probably be updated to
give a wider range of versions that question applies to, and to warn
people about this warning and say it's harmless (if it really is; as I
say, I don't know that yet).
(Yes, there's a Debian package for htdig. That's what I'm actually
using for my production htdig work on my server. I'm doing a build
from source as practice for building on a Solaris server that I don't
yet have access to, so I'm better prepared when I *get* access.)
