Okay, I'm now actually trying to build on the Solaris system I was
practicing for earlier today. It's a SunOS ice 5.8 generic sun4u
sparc, it says here. It has gcc installed, and configure chunks along
fine for a while -- until
checking for ar... missing_ar
configure: error: No ar utility found.
I don't get any hits in the mailing list for "missing_ar" or "no ar
utility", and I can't find anything that seems to relate to this in
the FAQ.
It's probably a pretty old version of Solaris, by the looks of it; but
it's what the hosting company chosen by the client is running, so
there's not much I can do about that.
