Just a quick suggestion, that I expect you have already checked, but you do have an appropriate set of inclusions/exclusions? The lowest common inclusion that I have seen is: http:// but note that this will not match in your case.
Changing your htdig command line to include -vvv should give you enough info to work out what the problem is, or to give the rest of us more to work on.
