If you haven't already done so, you might want to try running with -vv
or maybe even -vvv (the more v's the more debug info). This might give
you a clue about what is happening.

I would try manually removing everything from the database directory if
possible and then build new databases from scratch. If you have live
databases in the database directory, try at least removing all work and
log files.
