Have you verified that you also have allow_numbers (http:// www.htdig.org/dev/htdig-3.2/attrs.html#allow_numbers) set to true?
If you are certain the attributes are set correctly, you might want to look over the config file carefully for possible typos that might confuse the parser. A cat -v is also sometimes helpful in tracking down non-printing characters that have found their way into the config file.
