I assume the documents were generated by Adobe Acrobat 4.0?  As the message
above says, the version of the PDF is higher than what xpdf (and therefore
pdftotext) supports.  Can they be viewed with Acrobat Reader 3.0?  If not,
you may have problems with more than just indexing, unless your users all
upgrade their Reader.  You may want to investigate if Acrobat will allow
you to "downgrade" the documents to PDF version 1.2 until everything is
upgraded to support the newer format.

Let's hope Derek finds the time to upgrade xpdf to handle 1.3!  :-)
