The htdig-3.1.2.tar.gz file should be 1904593 bytes. If your copy is shorter it's truncated. If it's longer, it's probably corrupted (hint: use binary mode if transferring via FTP). If it's the right size, it may still be corrupted (you may want to try downloading it again), or it may be that your tar program is buggy. Here are a few other checks: $ sum htdig-3.1.2.tar.gz 54352 1860 $ md5sum htdig-3.1.2.tar.gz ddd0305d420e2d6025694d4e1448d5f7 htdig-3.1.2.tar.gz I'm not familiar with pax on BSDI systems, but on QNX they also have a tar command that's a front end to pax. I didn't like their tar or cpio very much, and I found a few things that just didn't seem to work right with them. My opinion was that pax was not appropriately named... I didn't attain peace with my QNX systems until I installed GNU tar. :-) -- Gilles R.
