It's always been an option to build a shared version of the Berkeley DB.
See db/docs/build/shared.html for the start documentation. The only
annoying thing is that they don't offer it as a configure flag like a
lot of other libraries (it would be very cool if ht://Dig just had to
pass --enable-shared).
