I can't remember the exact reasoning Hans-Peter raised, but it may have
been the thorny bug of < -> beginning of a tag.

Obviously, it seems much more efficient to call it once, though I don't
know if profiling would show it to be a huge speed gain. It would be
*nice* certainly. ;-)
