It depends a bit on how it would break. Compilation problems are the
easiest, but you can also set run tests, where it expects the test program
to come back without an error. (In the case of regex on BSDI, I'm not sure
how the core would affect the test, though I'd hope it would fail.)

Basically, if you write a small test program, the autoconf portion is
pretty easy.
