"failed miserably" isn't much to go on when trying to fix a problem.
Could you post the output from gmake? The output from configure may
also hold some clues. (Try these on a clean copy of the 1119 snapshot,
not the one the sysadmin has been fighting with all day, so we know how
it works right out of the box.)
