Currently, all searches are boolean searches--some are just
translated to add appropriate operators. What was your query exactly?

This isn't a bug. As Gilles has eloquently expressed several times,
this is simply matches_per_page * maximum_pages

BTW, this has been true for 3.1.5 as well as most recent 3.2.0bX code.
