Folks,

OK, so I took a step back yesterday and looked at the problem that I've
been having: ht://Dig refusing to index my site. Gilles' discovery that he
could index my site from his machine made me think that I was
micro-analysing too much, and could use a little perspective.

But my first conclusion was that ht://Dig was probably working fine, as
there are thousands of satisfied users that haven't yet mentioned this
problem. After a bit of hunting around, a few traceroutes and ping floods
(the former was just for fun :), I came to an irritating conclusion: My
host cannot consistantly and reliably sustain a connection to itself via
port 80.

Why this is the case, I don't know. The sysadmin says that it's an
upstream problem. But the important thing is that ht://Dig will,
theoretically, function now.

Thanks to Gilles, Doug, Benson and Jaap for permitting me to waste their
time, and to those of you that had my messages sitting in your inbox. :) I
wish that I'd figured this out earlier, before you folks spent time on
trying to get this working.

If there's one bug that drives me nuts, it's an *inconsistent* bug. I'm
glad to have nailed this one down, though, and I bet that ht://Dig will
work perfectly from here on out.

Best,
Waldo
