htdig essentially does not require any.
(if -i is not specified, it will look for db.docdb and db.wordlist)
(if -i is not there and -a is, it will look for .work versions of above)
htmerge looks for db.docdb and db.wordlist
(or .work versions if -a is supplied)
Currently (3.1.x) htsearch requires db.docdb, db.docs.index and
db.words.db
