According to E.Ryerson:

You need to define the template_map and template_name attributes in your
htdig.conf, to actually use those template files. By default, the
builtin-long and builtin-short templates are used instead. If you have
the htdig.conf file from version 3.1.2, you should just need to un-comment
the definitions already in the file.
