It's hard to gague the difference in sizes. On the one hand, the
Berkeley database code that 3.1.2 uses involves compression that
should shrink the database slightly.
On the other hand, versions before the 3.1.x releases had a variety
of database bugs that would ignore some documents completely,
incorrectly index others, and so on. Additionally, the 3.1.x releases
store the META description tags, which may add more to the database.
I don't recommend using any version except 3.1.2.
If you're particularly worried about database size and you have the
zlib compression library, I'd check out
