This looks a lot like what would happen if you applied, to the 3.1.3 source,
the highlighting patch I submitted back on October 29. It contained a bug,
around line 524 in Display.cc. The line:

                str << (sep.Count() > 0) ? sep[(i-1)%sep.Count()] : " ";

should be:

                str << ((sep.Count() > 0) ? sep[(i-1)%sep.Count()] : " ");

This was discussed in followup e-mails, and a corrected patch was posted
on the patch site on November 8. This correction should solve the problem.

Or better still, upgrade to 3.1.4 which fixes this and many other bugs.
