I'm happy to report that this problem has been resolved. Thanks to a
suggestion by "Budd, S" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, I upgraded to gcc/2.95.2,
and now everything builds smoothly. Also, this newer version of the
gcc package includes the corresponding libstdc++, so it no longer
needs to be installed separately.
