I have successfully used my own variables to set up the path names:
WEB= /Pathway/WebStuff
then I used this in the following:
prefix= $(WEB)/htdig
To use a predefined variable, you assign the variable using VARNAME=
Value
don't forget the space after the equals sign!
To use the variable, replace text with $(VARNAME)
