What did it return for the LOGICAL_WORDS for both searches? Are they
roughly the same? These are the core boolean expressions used for
each search. It's possible if there were a few fuzzy matches that the
expression wasn't quite what you wanted (in which case it's a bug).
The other thing to try is to set match_method each way and run
htsearch -vvv from the command line and take a look at the info that
comes up--it's not much, but it should show how the fuzzy algorithms
are working.
