I spoke too soon before. It looks like the bug in vixie-cron's SIGCHLD
signal handling is fixed in Red Hat 5.2, so this problem with htmerge's
sort failing would only affect Red Hat 5.0 & 5.1. If you don't want to
upgrade your whole system, you could probably just grab the RPM for
vixie-cron from a 5.2 distribution on a Red Hat mirror, e.g.:
