Here are a couple things you might try.
1) If your browser is set up to go through a proxy server, configure
htdig to use the same proxy server, using the "http_proxy" configuration
file parameter. Conversely, if your browser isn't using a proxy, make
sure htdig isn't either. Make sure you're connecting to the same port
on this system. The default port for http is 80, but if you're using
a different port to connect to that system in your browser, configure
htdig to use that same port.
2) Are you running your browser on the same system as htdig? If not,
try connecting to the same www server using a browser on your Linux
system, e.g. lynx or netscape. If that fails, look for a configuration
problem on that system. E.g. DNS setup, other network setup.
If all that fails, it could be a problem with your htdig configuration.
Take a close look at that to see if there's anything odd there. What
version of htdig came with your system? Perhaps you should upgrade
to the latest version, although something basic like what you're doing
shouldn't fail.
