That's because it's much easier to write a Perl script to wrap around
htsearch. Unfortunately, much of the work done by htsearch is not done in
a fully OO manner, so it would be difficult currently to do what you
propose. A rewrite is in progress on the 3.2 development code.
Sample wrappers are available in the contrib/ section of the website and
in your source tar.gz in the contrib/ directory as well.
