This will be the first thing I'll patch away when packaging the new
version for Debian, setuptools too often introduces nothing but problems.

Yes, imho it is, at least from a apcakgers point of view - we normally
run those tests with all python versions which are supported by the
distribution to make sure modules work with all versions.
