On March 14, 2000, CNN’s Beijing bureau chief Rebecca MacKinnon joined the CNN.com chat room to discuss the importance of the Taiwan elections. Here are some excerpts:
Question: What did Beijing mean today by saying it could "not sit idly by" if the elections steer the island toward independence?
Rebecca MacKinnon: Basically, the Chinese government is repeating every day the same threat that if Taiwan were to elect someone who did not resume talks on reunification with China, it will use military force. And that is clearly what the statement that was issued today was meant to imply.
