Dan Is it that you are sending down whitespace in one servlet/JSP to make sure the connection is not closed and then forwarding the request to another servlet/JSP for sending down the actual payload?
RequestDispatcher.forward throws an IllegalStateException "if the response was already committed". If that is the case, try including the response rather than forwarding.
