Perhaps race condition was a misleading term -- I was referring to the window
of time during which, if the connection were to be closed, the
IllegalStateException would be thrown. In my mental picture of the sequence of
events, the code was assuming that the connection wouldn't be closed behind its
back -- but 'race condition' isn't really the appropriate term.
