Happens with OS X 10.9.5 too. I never figured out before why I sometimes couldn't change the projection.
A bug. Clicking on the pop-up menu moves focus there. Focus shouldn't have to be "nowhere" in order for the menu to work. The same thing also happens on the Stitcher tab.
