There was a similar issue earlier: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hugin/+bug/1938453 For Wayland wxWidgets and GLEW needs to be compiled with EGL support. But I assume this is the case here, otherwise you would get another error message before (GLViewer.cpp: SetUpContext(): Error initialising GLEW: Unknown error.)
In this case it should work also with Wayland (in this case the X server is not used and running glxgear is unrelated.) You could try to run Hugin with GDK_BACKEND set to X11 GDK_BACKEND=x11 hugin to force the x11 emulation layer. Otherwise check the graphic card driver.
