ok, clean build of hugin/autopano/libpano13 from cvs, hugin is 0.8.0.3571,
system is:

linux-us74:/usr/local/hugin # cat /etc/SuSE-release
openSUSE 11.1 (i586)
VERSION = 11.1
linux-us74:/usr/local/hugin # uname -a
Linux linux-us74 2.6.27.7-9-pae #1 SMP 2008-12-04 18:10:04 +0100 i686 i686 i386
GNU/Linux

autopano works fine with the tutorial files and makes a useable pto file

mich...@linux-us74:~/Desktop/tutorial> autopano-c-complete.sh -o tutorial.pto
*.jpg
uname: Linux
Remaining arguments (8):
--> `p986.jpg'

SIFT Keypoint Generation, version 2.5.0

p992.jpg
  p993.jpg

Creating output file "tutorial.pto"

You can now load the output file into hugin.
Notice: You absolutely must adjust the field-of-view value for the images

also, building pano from hugin assistant builds a perfectly adequate panorama.

are you sure all is correct with your build and hardware?
