I would add that there are essentially 2 related reasons why people contribute
to any project:

  (1) To improve the project.
  (2) To receive recognition and glory.

and in my experience, (1) is not nearly so sweet without (2).

One of the most important features provided by DVCSs is recognition;
you don't need commit privileges to have your name properly credited
for your contributions, and no particular repository is *inherently*
more important than another.

Also, patch series can be sculpted locally until they are beautiful
works of art, and patch transmission or repository communication is
easy.
