If your fisheye is straight up, the parts of the fisheye shot which
could match the 8 images around is quite distorted. The control point
generator (CPG) might not be able to find the matches. The matching
becomes even more difficult if the images around are made with a
different lens. You can sometimes still succeed by increasing the
image size the CPG is made to look at, by adding a --maxdim argument
to the command line for the CPG (go to settings - control point
generators; autopano-sift-c will tell you what parameters it accepts
if you call it without any) and try a number larger than your image's
largest dimension.
In my experience though, autopano-sift-c isn't necessarily the best
CPG to use to match images with very dissimilar optical properties. As
a second measure, try using alternative CPGs. I find that autopano
often finds control points where the others don't. I often start out
with panomatic, since that is quite fast, and then use autopano and/or
autopano-sift-c if I dont have a convincing result from panomatic
alone.
Also, if you can repeat the take, try tilting the fisheye shot so it
has parts matching your images around which aren't so distorted to
help the CPGs. It's usually also a good idea to take the shot so that
the part of the ground that (by tilting it) is less distorted,
contains a part of the scene which is likely to succeed with the CPGs,
so avoid very dark, very bright, low contrast and repetitive patterns.
Finally, if all else fails, the control point editor allows you to
quite easily create control points manually. You don't need that many
to get a decent result, I'd say a good half dozen should be enough.
Don't forget to tell hugin the zenith shot is fisheye (in case it
hasn't found that from the EXIF data).
