I have been using hugin since before 0.8 times, but still I can't
figure out how I can generate a HDR image from a stack of photos taken
with different exposures.

I mean that the UI doesn't communicate in a friendly way _how_ a HDR
image or panorama is got.

It seems that such a task is considered a specialized one, not to be
performed from "normal" users.

Isn't it possible to put a checkbox in the assistent tab, so that the
user can easily get a HDR result?
