Hi there, in fact I use Panini<http://sourceforge.net/projects/pvqt/files/panini/Panini%200.71.100/>as an opensource viewer on Linux/FreeBSD and also on Windows.
To edit nadir and zenith projections I use Panotools::Script<http://search.cpan.org/dist/Panotools-Script/>and transform an equirectangular projection to 6 cube faces and then back to erect. To do this I use the specific scripts erect2cubic and then cubic2erect after editing them on GIMP. If somebody wants I can do a workflow and share. I also have them ready to windows and can share some compilation hints on linux/bsd's.
