I don't know about Australia, but there are studies being done into the Hum worldwide, if not by scientists, then by private individuals who are pooling their data onto the web. It should be emphasised that The Hum is not a noise, in the acoustical sense, but it's the illusion of noise that's being caused by external, to the body, influences of an unknown origin. It seems that it's being picked up either between the ears hearing mechanism and the brain. Either the brain itself or the nerve from the ear to the brain. My own personal experience seems to favour the nerve being affected by electromagnetic energy, but not from phone masts or other similar kinds of transmission.
