One of the mainstays if ELF effects in its' banning was the effect on the human body. We have a built in fear response when our senses pick up something not normal and even capable of harming us. That's how we've survived for many thousands of years. You story sounds along these lines. The hum in a broad sense seems to be more low level and persistent without this fear component- so an interesting event in itself. It will be interesting to see if you get a follow up hum, low level and modulating maybe which could indicate increased sensitivity. I don't want to pre-empt this, of course, but you will probably tell the difference easily enough to your first experiences. Why did your GF think to UFO and not just stealth technologies of unknown source- or ELF pollution itself, Was it that loud &/or giving a travelling sense around the property? [PS: 2nd floor is often more prone to Hums...]
