Hi All, I had some time to test the noise canceling headphones and in the ear isolation ear buds as to its effect on the hum I hear. I also played with close proximity to those large variac transformers.
First the variac's do not seem to block the hum but rather mask it so that did not go anywhere. Second the over the ear noise canceling headphones do not block or prevent the hum. They are soothing non-the-less as they block most sounds especially in the low frequencies though. The in the ear noise isolation ear buds, now for some reason they block the hum completely. This is contrary to the observation that the hum is generated within the ear but they make the hum go away. I am using iogear ear buds. They fit into the ear and are like ear plugs with headphone speakers built in. They for an air tight seal in the ear and block all sounds. I bought them to use on airplane trips as the current clientele are so noisy with their cell phones, baby crying and general rude behavior. Anyway they work for me and you can sleep with them as they are small and comfortable to wear. The only draw back is they pretty much block all sound so intruders and alarms will not be heard. But I think you can plug them into an iPod touch and set an alarm on it to act as a alarm clock if your want. But it does not seem to prevent the dizziness issue. I would like to hear from specialists in the medical profession as to why this would work and any theories as to why this would work. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Hum Sufferers" group.
