In this experiment a fine flat bronze spring is clamped firmly at one end
and a small mass in the form of a blob of solder affixed to the other end.
The length of spring and the size of mass are chosen to vibrate at the same
frequency as the mains electrical supply.

The device is placed inside a container to screen it from any electric or
magnetic fields and the movement of the mass observed by means of a laser
beam.
The mass can be observed to remain in a state of permanent vibration and
although some random flections take place, for most of the time the
vibrating mass stays in phase with the electrical supply despite the
attempts at screening.
