PLEASE CIRCULATE!

Seeking Names of Women across India fighting against Corporate Crime –
Chingari 2009 DEADLINE OCTOBER 1st 2009.

Dear friends,

Greetings! As you know, 2009 is the 25th Anniversary year of the Bhopal
Disaster. In December 1984, tonnes of toxic gas leaked from Union Carbide's
pesticide plant, killing and maiming thousands. Even as the survivors of
both the gas leak and the subsequent toxic ground-water contamination still
await justice, many other "Bhopals" unfold all over the country. While the
Bhopal Union Carbide disaster and Carbide-Dow's wicked actions have become
iconic for the criminal behaviour of corporations in this neo-liberal
economic age, various other profit-hungry corporate interests are indulging
in similar crimes, out to plunder local communities' resources with no care
for human rights.

Bleak as the picture is, it is heartening to see that many local communities
are resisting to conserve their resources and environments in the face of
severely adverse conditions. Moreover, such resistance struggles are often
found to be led or propelled by courageous local women who actively mobilise
their communities against exploitation.

Two such courageous women, Rashida Bee and Champa Devi Shukla, founded the
Chingari Trust in Bhopal with funds from the Goldman Environment Award in
2005. Along with other survivors’ organisations in Bhopal, their union of
women workers had taken on Union Carbide and Dow, and today they continue to
struggle for justice in Bhopal.

*On the occasion of this 25th Anniversary year, we plan to identify and
honour 25 women fighters for justice against corporate crime. We request you
to recommend names of such women “CHINGARIS” anywhere in India, especially
in remote rural areas. Through this effort, we will salute the spirit of
such women all over India and bring their struggles to public light and aid
the fight for justice.*

Hence, we request you to nominate a *CHINGARI* whom you know. Please send us
her name with contact details, the nature of the struggle, the corporation
that is being fought, achievements of the movement, obstacles (still) faced,
etc.

*Please send in your nomination by email (Subject: "Chingari 2009") latest *
*by **October 1st 2009** to Tarun Thomas <chingaritr...@gmail.com> and cc
to: Kavitha <kavitha.kuruga...@gmail.com> and madhu <madhu.du...@gmail.com>.
For inquiries, you can reach Tarun at Chingari's office number 0755-2747500.
