Anna Hazare has at least one contribution to his credit ...it has woken up quite a few who were seriously slumbering on the issue of corruption ...and many a versions of Lok Pal Bill are now emerging at the very last moment ...possibly since after 42 years he has got the government to get a bit serious about the whole thing ... full credit to Anna here . Had done it on a number of occasions too earlier with Maharashtra politicians.
The current high pitched public debate on corruption started a few months back with IAC alone set up against the political establishment . The Sonia Gandhi's government & its collection of experts & activists in the NAC have been working on the Whistle Blower Protection Bill , Judicial Accountability Bill & the Lok Pal Bill for quite some time now ...no one was sure of the progress , let alone if they had a dead line at all ...looked like at least another 10 year battle like the RTI . Meanwhile almost any one within the government & dissenting with the powers to be f is getting the routine sarkari stick , from the very mild transfers to the suspensions & files opened , cases foisted on them . Modi is going after the policemen who have any thing but a different view on the Gujarat riots under his charge. The activists count at least 13 activists killed in pursuit of RTI , threatening calls is a routine. IAC its self has veteran activists like Medha Patkar & Swami Agnivesh supporting Anna. Also in the name of balanced debate on TV , since it looks so one sided with the routine Congress , BJP and IAC pitched against each other , we are now seeing a number of "activists / expert guests" that the public at large knows very little about ...both their work & themselves. They too are getting their fair chance to get the needed mileage ... courtesy Anna . The government says Anna's bill covers too much , is too powerful as it aims to strike at almost every office funded by public money from top to bottom central & state ...the other activist critics say it covers too little or does not cover some thing they dearly want .... business , NGOs etc. As for covering NGOs, Prashant Bhushan has explained , they work on public donations & not tax payers money that this bill covers & as many of them take up causes against the government , the incentive to misuse are greater . No other Baba but Ram Dev Baba is being investigated , while there are bigger charges against some others including rape & murder . The CBI has been after Ram Dev and others close to him since they lathi charged him off the stage at 2 AM one night . Had he gone on a token fast as advised by Sibbal , things would have been fine for the Baba. There a choice here , if you do not trust the NGO do not donate , but you can't get your ration card from the person you like . What about religious establishments , why include NGOs but exclude them ? Thry too work on vountary public donations ? Do we need a Voluntary Pubic Donations Funded Institutions Act here ? Every one agrees that corporates need to be covered too more directly as their great need for profits is one of the root causes of corruption , the other being the huge need of funds to run the political establishment & fight elections... the two make ideal partners , has made Corruption the biggest & fastest service industry in India . In IAC's JLP if the corporates are caught bribing the government the normal judicial process takes over . As for the so called whistle blower filing false & frivolous complaints , the privileged & powerful among the citizenry , the state & police do so routinely against the not so lucky & if the courts take a strict view and punish the offenders , these incidents will decrease . The Jan Lok Pal Bill envisages a normal judicial process , it just fast tracks it & advocates immediate suspension of the person , recovery & harsher punishment for corruption in government . There is an increasing negative tendency to fight some one doing any good , as you disagree with him somewhere on some thing of some importance or none at all .
