Human rights groups and social activists will observe October 8 as a black
day in protest against the arrest of senior IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt. They
will distribute pamphlets in this regard, explaining why he and his family
were being humiliated by the Narendra Modi government.

Asserting that Bhatt's arrest amounted to vindictiveness of the state
government because he had deposed in the court against Modi, secretary of
Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) Teesta Setalvad said the action against
Bhatt was taken to intimidate other witnesses. She termed the arrest
"undemocratic and autocratic'', and vowed to extend support to witnesses in
the interest of justice and peace.

Claiming that a "misinformation campaign'' had been launched in the media
about why Bhatt did not speak earlier if he had evidence about the alleged
involvement of politicians in the riots and Pandya's murder, she said Bhatt
had written about it to the state government in 2003 itself when he was
Superintendent of Sabarmati Central Jail. She referred to Bhatt's affidavit
submitted in the Gujarat High Court in this connection recently.

Setalvad said by opening past cases against Bhatt, an effort was being made
to discredit him. But his past record had nothing to do with what he exposed
about the conduct and role of Modi in the riots. The court, she said, would
decide the matter on the basis of evidence.

PUCL representative Gautam Thakkar said they would never forget what
happened in 2002 in Gujarat and would continue to extend moral support to
the people in their legal and democratic battle to fight for justice

*The UID project i**s going to do almost exactly the same thing which the
predecessors of Hitler did, else how is it that Germany always had the lists

of Jewish names even prior to the arrival of the Nazis? The Nazis got these
lists with the help of IBM which was in the 'census' business that included
racial census that entailed not only count the Jews but also identifying
them. At the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, there is an
exhibit of an IBM Hollerith D-11 card sorting machine that was responsible
for organising the census of 1933 that first identified the Jews.*
