Below is short report by satyen bordoloi First the police, who had got a whiff of what was brewing despite the utmost secrecy with which the whole affair was handled, tried to stop people from entering the Godrej Business Park in Vikhroli. But the protestors forced open the gates and entered the premises. Once inside, they were prevented from going any further by dozens of guards and police personnel who roughly handled the protestors initially, slapping, abusing and punching them - falling short of using their plastic batons and lathis. Once this skirmish was over, and the protestors occupied the road, the authorities tried another trick. They told the protestors that DOW Chemicals had no office in those premises and that their office was in another business park nearby. They politely asked the protestors to go away saying that they would be escorted by the police themselves. Better sense prevailed when one protestor checked it out once again and confirmed that DOW chemicals had not one, but two offices in the premises. What followed was nearly a three hours of standoff where the protestors were almost arrested with 8 big vans being brought in, the security guard quarantining the area as if it were a crime scene and preventing anyone from even listening to the slogans, almost 150 people (khaki policemen, blue uniformed security guards, plain-clothed policemen and guards and others guarding the nearly 200 protestors and preventing them even from filling up water in their bottles [they allowed only urban, looking protestors to go and fill the bottles]) and many such scenes that becomes a classic example of how protests are handled in the country. Once can say, at least they were not shot. Finally, five protestors were taken to the DOW chemicals office, where five of DOWs representative met while being guarded by 15 security and police personnel .
