I should say the problem does not exhibit itself with
valgrind.  It also does not exhibit itself if I link with
the debugging malloc "dmalloc" from dmalloc.com.

I'm starting to wonder whether this is some weird issue
with the glibc malloc/free on SLES10/PPC..
