This is waaay off-topic for the hwseq-list, so I'll cc: it to music-bar in
the hopes it moves over there.

The original poster wanted to know what modem he should buy to use with
Linux. Since he wants to avoid the WinMODEM assimiliation effect, my
suggestion to him was to get an external modem and stay away from internal
modems forever.

Getting an external modem pretty much guarantees that he won't fall for the
WinMODEM trap. Also, an external modem is generally easier to upgrade,
tweak with, etc. without requiring an IRQ, or a PCI slot - something that
most modern PC musicians are lacking. Since he's also a musician, I
figured the answer "stay away from internal modems, get an external one"
was the best answer I could possibly give him - he avoids WinMODEM
problems, he doesn't eat up a slot or IRQ in his system (valuable if you're
building your PC to do music), and its easy to upgrade and see whats going
on with an external modem.

Plus, its pretty much guaranteed to work with Linux, and potentially BeOS
too - something that not all internal modems will work with. And, since
he's a musician, he may want to keep the option open for one day running
BeOS relatively easily - an internal modem would *possibly* be one more
broken link in the chain, if he were to try and get BeOS running for
Internet access.

From my experience, WinMODEMS (and internal modem hardware in general)
have been more hassle than they're worth. And hassle is something that the
average PC musician does not need.

So you see, that is my reasoning. Now, it's just my advice - certainly
there's no reason my advice should be considered any more valuable than
anyone elses out on the Internet, and I certainly don't post advice with
the idea that its coming from any higher source necessarily. Far be it from
me to be the expert in anything, actually.

So take all of the above reasoning with whatever grain of salt you require...
