i work with a very simple midi keyboard that can send out ordinary MIDI
controls. When i use the command to switch the sound while recording on the
RM1x (in pattern-mode) i can record/use multiple sounds in one track in one
section. I guess things like this could also work from a software sequencer
(yuck). The turn knobs on the blue box itself somehow do not send the
sound-change commands. If i then switch to the same track in the next
section i can again record even different voices. Another trick i use to
"uniquify" a track so that i can play trick on only one section at the time,
is to append the section to itself and after that splitting it back to its
original size. As the Yamaha copy job32 option just refers to the same data
in another section/track. It doesn't stop me from running into the blue
box's memory every now and then.

I posted the start of a FAQ on the Teklab Forum that might explain some
of this for you, but basically the real data is recorded on user phrases.
Patterns just refer to phrases, so if you copy a pattern from one section
to another, the new section has the same phrase allocations as the one
you copied but it doesn't have a new copy of the actual phrase data, it
just refers to the same data. This is obviously optimised to make it easy
for people who just reuse the preset phrases.
This is more clear when you look in Patch mode to see the phrase
allocations of a pattern, then look in Edit mode to see the actual phrase
events. If you copy a pattern you will see that it still uses the same
phrase
name on that track.

I agree.
Memory-wise it's good to reuse the phrases. What i miss is a simple job in
the job list called 'make pattern unique' or something. I think there's too
much button pushing and knob twiddling before you het your phrase in the
right place, plus i shouldn't have to remember phrase numbers just to edit a
unique phrase.
