I use the GRID record mode all the time for starting off a drum track.  I
just layer things ontop of eachother and then I do a split drum track which
seems to work only half the time, but when it does I just mute diffrent
sections until I think it sounds right, then go on adding other missing
elements like hi hats and the like.  A bit primitive, but then so is my
music.  Intentionally of course.
